Mouse Alternatives

The previous ball talks about alternative keyboards, but there also needs to be accommodations for the mouse. Trackballs can be used as a mouse for students, Unlike a mouse the trackball stays in place and moves in response to the rotation of the ball. The trackballs move in rotation to move the mouse around on the screen. In addition, there are buttons around the edge of the trackball. These buttons are used just like on a mouse. They come in many shapes and sizes to meet the needs of different students. Also, they come in different prices you can get a lower level or a more technical trackball. However, the feature and size of the roller are important in determining its appropriateness for students with disabilities.

Similar to the trackball students can use a joysticks and they also provide a stationary base. The students can use joysticks to access a computer. Adapted joysticks may include one or more features such as: special handles to accommodate different grasping abilities, keyguards, a click-lock button and switch receptacles.
